The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

Share:
Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series is an epic adventure of a group of characters from Emond's Field in the Two Rivers area of the world. The books follow many different paths that converge toward the end for a raging battle of good vs evil. Stand aside Tolkien, Jordan is King.

When I picked up the first book in the series The Eye of the World in 1995 almost put it back! This is a big long book and I did not want to be spending that much time reading but a friend said I would enjoy it. Well let me tell you I have never been sorry for deciding to try it. From the prologue to the last page I was hooked and six hours later I had to force myself to put it down and go to work. When I got home I went straight back to reading and stayed up until early morning and repeated this routine until the book was finished. Being hungry for more I went and bought a couple more in the series and went through the same pattern until I was caught up and waiting for the next book. Each time one was coming out I would reread the books I had so far in preparation for the next. Every time I reread one of the books I find something I missed before.

I was devastated to hear of Robert Jordan's death but delighted they had found a writer who could deliver what was needed. This series of book reviews will set up the stories covered in each book as a tribute to a Master Gleeman of the 21st century. I will endeavor to whet your appetite without giving away the wonderful story. You can read any of the books and enjoy them but it's best to start at the beginning to see how the characters develop.

The Eye of the World

By Robert Jordan Copywrite 1990

"The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In one Age called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, ........"
This is the start of the first chapter of each book. In The Eye of the World it continues, "A wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning . There are neither beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning."

In the first few chapters you are introduced to Rand, Mat, and Perrin farm boys from the town of Emond's Field, in Two Rivers, a long forgotten area of the world. Also, you will meet Nynaeve the village wisdom, and Egwene the mayor's daughter plus the stranger's in the village including Thom the Master Bard, Moiraine the Aes Sadai, Lan her warder, and Padin Fain the peddler. After fighting off the evil monsters called Trollocks and Myddraals sent to destroy one of the boys Moiraine, Lan Rand, Mat, Perrin, Thom, and Egwene flee the village with the Dark One after them.

The boys flee with Moiraine and Lan in the dead of night to protect the village from further harm. Egwene sensing something is up catches them in the stable just before they leave and makes them take her with them. Thom also invites himself along for the protection of the group. In one of the towns they are found by Nynaeve and she joins the group to protect the villagers. They ride hard and fast but eventually they they become separated into three groups when evil traps them. Thom, Rand and Mat in one, Perrin and Egwene in the second, and Moiraine, Lan, and Nynaeve in the third.

Thom, Rand and Mat meet Captain Domon and travel with him to Whitebridge. There the two boys become separated from Thom and adventure on their own to eventually arrive in Caemlyn. Rand meets Loial an Ogier who wishes to travel with them. Moiraine, Lan, and Nynaeve are following the trail of Perrin and Egwene who meet up with Elias and the Tinkers and travel with them until they have to turn off toward Caemlyn. On the way Perrin and Egwene are captured by the Children of the Light and are rescued by Moiraine, Nynaeve and Lan. All end up in Caemlyn and now find they must travel to the Blight to rescue the Eye of the World.

Loial is able to open the waygate and they barely escape the evil within to arrive Fal Dara from where they travel into the Blight. Eventually they find the Green Man, the Eye of the World and they fight some of the Forsaken. Rand finds out things about himself that he does not like and broods about it. The rest are happy and recovering in the Borderlands waiting for Moiraine's next move...

So ends the first of many a good read!
