SUMERIAN FOUNDATION TABLET - ($25 US)

Dedication Prayer to Goddess Ishtar-Inanna

Stone-cast replica of black serpentine tablet from ancient Sumeria dated to 2090 BC, 75 x 50 mm (3 x 2") engraved inscriptions on both sides, with parchment description.

Carved in stone and more durable than conventional clay tablets of the period, engraved tablets like this were given out to commemorate special occasions. This tablet records the restoration of the city of Eanna, named after the historical goddess Ishtar-Inanna by Shul-Gi King of Ur III, who reigned Sumer and Akkad from 2097 to 2080 BC.

Recovered from a building cornerstone in the ruins of the ancient city, when first excavated, it was accompanied by a statuette of the earlier king Ur-Namma, which portrays him carrying a basket of clay on his head for casting the first brick.

The cuneiform inscription reads:

"FOR INANNA, MOTHER GODDESS, LADY OF EANNA, LADY OF SHUI-GI THE MIGHTY KING OF UR, SUMER AND AKKAD. EANNA, IT'S SITE HE RESTORED, IT'S GREAT WALL HE BUILT."
