ISHTAR RISING - Sumerian-Assyrian cylinder seal - ($20 USD)

Assyrian 1700 BC

Stone-cast cylinder seal, black hydrostone, 33 mm (1.25") with terracotta impression tablet, 85 x 50 mm (3.5 x 2") & description

Replica of an engraved Assyrian seal from the 17th century BC during the reign of the Kings of Iamhad (Aleppo), a period of political stability which developed its own distinctive iconography and style. Fashioned with angled cutting wheels, the seal design reflects a medley of Akkadian & Babylonian influence, including the classic winged disk adopted into Assyrian iconography from Egypt.

The seal portrays the celestial goddess Ishtar with her arms raised to the winged solar disk above. An ancient time reference, the Astrological Lion of Leo leaps across the sky, accompanied by the elemental Storm Bird Zu, who's "claws rent the sky." Assisted by the ancient Tiamet Dragon-Griffen standing on it's hind legs, the fearsome Bull of Heaven waits before the goddess, to do her bidding. As if to underline their celestial origins, a large star sits directly between Ishtar and the Bull.

The Bull of Heaven was dispatched by the goddess upon a hapless earth during the Deluge. The Bull represents the elemental forces of the Great Flood which "roared like a bull." Standing behind the goddess, the well known earth god Ea-Enki, like the Biblical Noah, makes offering on a small altar to placate her.
