SUMERIAN CYLINDER SEAL - ($20 US)

Sun God & Celestial Winged Bull
2100 BC replica

Stone-cast cylinder seal 15 mm (half inch)
with matching roll-out tablet 75 x 30 mm (2.75 x 1 inch) & description

Replica of a 2100 BC engraved seal found along the old trade route which snakes through northern Iran. Seals of this type, with simplified graphic designs depicting archaic myths and mythic creatures, typify the revival of Sumerian culture following the Akkadian collapse around 2100 BC.

Following the fall of the Akkadian Empire, which initiated the last and third dynasty of Ur, a renaissance of Sumerian culture across Mesopotamia saw the reappearance of hand-engraved cylinder seals which harken back to Early Dynastic prototypes.

The seal displays star symbols around the familiar bearded and helmeted sun god Marduk-Shamash, who stands with raised weapon against the fearsome winged "Bull of Heaven." The terrestrial Tree Of Life he protects, is depicted behind him in the very ancient form of an ascending serpent, a creature of the earth encircling a tree, the ancient image of the Caduceus. An engraved panel displays the cyclic movements of the stars and planets responsible for the celestial BullŐs appearance. A silhouette of the elemental Storm Bird-Demon Zu fills the sky. The bullŐs wings indicate itŐs heavenly or stellar origin.
